“It is a peculiar sensation, this double consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. One ever feels his twoness – an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder.”
This body of work represents a personal genesis for exploration in cultural identity, social awareness, and acknowledgement of history as the catalyst for social and racial divide as well as social and racial harmony.
To be African American is to be born African without the memory and American without the privilege. To see view yourself based on the way you are perceived ultimately effects the way you perceive others. This in turn forces you to wear masks based on the circumstance.
