Dale Kennington

Artist Statement Submitted 2014

In early 2002 I began work on a series of ten oil on folded wood panel screens, each screen painted on both sides. I finished that series in late 2004. I then decided that I was not through with painting screens and I painted a second series of five, finishing in spring of 2007. Each screen in the second series has a hidden compartment, opened by a key. When that series is shown, the keys are left in and the compartments are open. Inside is a bit of original poetry covered by a plate of glass. These screens give us a virtual census of place, of people, of our society as a whole. I paint the things we have in common, the familiar rituals we repeat time and again without thought. "Out of the ordinary," by definition, tells us what we are not. The commonplace tells us what we are.
