Artist Statement Submitted 2020
My recent works draw references to architecture but are not intended to be renderings of mechanical exactness; rather they celebrate the imprecision of human endeavor and the tactility of something navigated by the hand. Quietly nuanced forms which speak simultaneously to complexity and ease are unglazed and sanded smooth, invoking a stone-like quality of the material. I indulge in acts of labor in my practice as a meditative space, and see a connection between my labor and the labor of makers throughout time. These works do not recall a specific temporal space but rather use archetypes of spatial relationships and geometry as a means to access a wide swath of time and location. When color is used it is added to the clay rather than applied.
