Artist Statement Submitted 2014In my work, nature, landscape, sunrise, the gloaming, paint and color, become a stirred fiction. Less about verisimilitude, yet true to the experience of looking and being there, I produce images that merge the actual materiality of painting with illusion and abstraction.
Sections of my paintings offer nature’s expansive freedoms; yet the particularity of shaggy plant forms, animated light patterns, and color abstractions, underline the presence of paint and how the image is built. There is a fugitive quality to the work that depicts a shifting and uncomfortable nature, that closely reflects our own human nature.
In this parallel way, nature and landscape still have the power to deliver content and meaning to us. We are connected to the patterns and signals found within the language of rocks, reeds, and vistas that glow. My paintings depict this connection that courses through even the most benign landscapes, just below our consciousness.
