Peering beyond the mountains of North Carolina, where I live and was born, my work captures observations of place and people that define and inform a diaspora that shapes how we see ourselves as southern. I find that meditation on place brings us fellowship with other human beings. This connection is motivated by a deep impulse to share and to serve not only evidence of the creative process, but a glimpse into how we come to understand ourselves more deeply. A sense of place matters to human beings. It is in and through place—where we go and where we call home—that can bring us together as well as shed light on our differences. Observations of street life, people at work, or places that hold intense memory help inspire our sense of the future. Returning home always with fresh eyes, to see the south where I live, work, and share.
