Artist Statement Submitted 2020

Continuing my exploration of the inescapable relationships individuals and societies have with place and location, my intricate topographical paintings offer unique vantage points on the myriad forces at work upon the global landscape and its inhabitants. Merging perception with proprioception - an awareness of our body in space - these images focus on notable changes in evolving landscapes, building tension, and empathy as multiple perspectives coalesce. Meteorologist Edward Lorenz stated, "When a butterfly flutters its wings in one part of the world, it can eventually cause a hurricane in another." As socio-economic events and natural phenomena unfold, I visualize webs of connections in constant states of flux. Although not always apparent, these connections create perceivable links between the natural and synthetic, the tranquil and turbulent. I strive to address these relationships and create an understanding of their chaotic ramifications in our interconnected global society.
