Artist Statement Submitted 2019

My paintings explore the individual’s and societies’ relationship with place, location and boundaries. Systems created by society challenge how we perceive, understand and are permitted to navigate our surroundings. I attempt to express the tension between natural and societal orders and to address the urgent issues of migration and environmental concerns impacting our lives through diagrammatic, layered images. This imagery refers to actual geographic areas of conflict or places of troubling environmental conditions. I work two-dimensionally with an abstract vocabulary and, in some works, embed 3D printed forms into the surface of the paintings. I hope to convey to viewers a sense of the human experience in the lines and arcs radiating from these sites and in that way capture a sense of the fleeting reality of our contemporary world.
