Carson Barnes

Artist Statement Submitted 2018

It’s a calling, to resurrect these women of the past. They felt joy, grief, fury, terror, love; research finds who they were, what this moment was. They don't move, so I must find their best views, on my back on cemetery gravel or mud, finding the gaze. Several views may be combined just as we combine views of sculpture in our minds to comprehend them.

Why bring them to life? The attitudes of their worlds are in their situations, and stories. Culture has changed, human beings have… not so much.

My breath catches; I see an illusion of faint motion when expression, light, color, and composition are in harmony. I hope you can’t stop looking at them. They deserve remembrance, and celebration.
