Caroline Rumley

Artist Statement Submitted 2018

Caroline is a filmmaker and visual artist born in a small town in North Carolina. Working primarily with moving images, she is interested in the visual narrative in its many forms, particularly in what Malcolm Gladwell calls a “thin-sliced instance,” that brief flash that tells you all you need to know. Collaging solo shot video and found and archival footage with spoken word and stark or keening sonic mixes, this short format work often deals with difficult themes of inequality and right extremism, but also sometimes simply with the artistic process itself. Regardless of topic, the films usually stem from the artist's personal Auseinandersetzung with the South as she looks for the good, but doesn't always find it.
