Brian Rutenberg
South Carolina

Artist Statement Submitted 2014

I was born and raised in the unique and resplendent part of South Carolina from Myrtle Beach down to Charleston and as far back as I can remember it has served as my muse.
From hushed rivers and salty marshes to twisted Live Oak trees clotted with Spanish Moss, coastal South Carolina is robust with visual poetry, a landscape complicated in its layers, requiring delicate modulations of color to evoke a hallucinatory, melancholic light. The compositions of these paintings has evolved over several past bodies of work and often feature a liquid open central area which is buttressed by denser more muscular passages on the sides, light in the painting usually gleams down from the top while the bottom provides ballast, reversing the "load and support" of Monet's late paintings in which the weight is positioned on top. I try to push color as far as I possibly can from tertiary to saturated hue, sometimes at levels of intensity that border on wildness.
