Artist Statement Submitted 2016
At twenty-two I left Georgia and taught myself to draw and paint. I began exploring art of the everyday, first as a street artist in Paris, a caricaturist in front of Notre Dame and in the south of France. When I returned to the United States, I started doing paintings about America through Walmart. I'm interested in making art out of common environments that are representative of where we are as a culture. I spent ten years traveling and painting Walmarts and was profiled in the New Yorker and Sunday morning CBS, was a guest on the Colbert Show, and was featured in Time magazine. My current series continues exploring America during this period of transition, by painting ordinary people while couchsurfing through Airbnb.I have also completed several commissions for universities, large publicly owned corporations, and privately owned companies.
