Artist Statement Submitted 2016

I love and believe in the painterliness of the video game graphics and their capacity to meaningfully correspond with the history of visual expression. I also believe in the power of work that speaks to what already exists, extending the discussion of a given idea through time and updating its relevance. Painting and photo have a rivalry I’ve always enjoyed, but they overlap in the age of the digital since our understanding of shapes, color, and value in painting and photography is cognitively no different from our understanding of digital imagery. I use painting, cyanotype, and digital printing to put the intersection of painting, photography, and computing in contact with the history of art, either by excavating art-historical references from games or activating non-art graphics in ways that correspond to art and artists I find fascinating.
