Anja Marais

Artist Statement Submitted 2015

My art projects are installations of a hybrid of disciplines: sculpture, photography, mixed media collages and moving images. My work grows from a split-individuality, a marginality and ambivalence caused by my own personal equation, that of being a white African, a long-lost European, a Colonized. I do manage through my art to reformulate my exilic existence within the prevailing two-term system of subject and object, ego and non-ego, to reinterpret my transactions with nature, to newly translate my cultural inheritance, to develop new modes of organizing experience, new ways of seeing the outer world and a new set of relations of the individual to himself, to nature, and to my fellow-men.
