Artist Statement Submitted 2016My newest body of work is an exploration in painting and photography. By combining photography (an art form where one must be physically present) with painting (an art form that does not require physical presence) I am illustrating the desire for exploration within the limitations of domesticity historically applied to women artist. . Within this context, two socially acceptable forms of exploration have been painting and writing. The treatment and “subject matter” of my work remains decidedly romantic and symbolically feminine while the titles, lifted from literature illustrating and/or questioning the condition of a woman’s independence, represent the desire ever present.
This exploration is a natural evolution of my work. My work has always been an outlet for criticism and celebration of my place as a woman artist within the South. I have balanced affection for these subjects with precise and unsentimental observation.
This series is a combination of paintings and photographs.
