Artist Statement Submitted 2019

My work is ten pages of my webcomic, Cardinal Traits, about a black young artist named Naomi from North Charleston, struggling with self acceptance. Naomi’s art is very special. She can make her art come to life, but she doesn’t know it yet, because she stopped drawing so her “Trait” could not manifest when it should have. She had been drawing since she could hold a pencil, but she spent all of her time in high school denying who she was to become popular. She straightens her hair, starves herself, and stops drawing and reading comics because she thinks those things made her less desirable. At the end of her high school career, she tires of denying who she is and applies to an art college and gets in. She embraces her curves and coils and prepares for college, but she still has insecurities. This scene happens right after Naomi hears racial slurs in a movie theater. She draws on the mirror to make herself feel better, and her drawing comes to life and gives her some much needed advice.
