Artist Statement Submitted 2014
My work is an obsessive rationalization of anxiety or trauma. Systematic applications of non-traditional material allow me to get lost in the therapeutic and solipsistic process of making. Through this repetition I can enter a welcomed trance-like state and temporarily forget my anxiety. Ultimately it is about healing from threats to my sheltered mental existence, through which I also hope to build empathy with the viewer. I appropriate characters from cartoons that I have been familiar with since childhood in order to find security and connect with a lost innocence, as well as make a conceptual statement that the absurd nature of these characters can be a reality in day to day life. My deliberate choice of materials such as party streamers and glitter reinforces this connection to childhood.
