Artist Statement Submitted 2016Born in Brazil but raised by his adoptive Caucasian family in Tennessee from infancy, Ronnie Beets is an artist who has utilized his inherent feelings as an outsider to inspire his art. Beets’ art illuminates the reality of being an "other" for the viewer by boldly addressing Southern ideals of what it means to be an ethnic minority, gay, or simply different. Through his daring Picassoesque style, Beets compels the viewer to question his or her own identity and beliefs in today’s South.
Beets hopes that his work will ultimately expand the perspectives of his viewers, leading to a greater acceptance of those who have been marginalized in our society. In his own words, “I offer someone an opportunity to see their world through a different lens.”
