Artist Statement Submitted 2015My work focuses on the everyday environment. My interest is in what goes unnoticed.
I edit from a context a frame counter to what is usually intended, creating a different viewpoint. Taking this position, I am interested in the transformation of the rural landscape through a photographic project titled, “Dirt for Sale: Constructing the Landscape of the New American South”:
“The I-85 corridor between Charlotte, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the five fastest growing regions in the country. As this system intersects with upstate South Carolina, population growth and land use changes at alarming rates.
This transformation is characterized by residential cul-de-sac subdivisions and commercial strip developments in undifferentiated and dispersed patterns that put economic pressure on open farmland, forests, and otherwise idle property.
This work is a documentation of these varied conditions as the Southern Landscape is being transformed into something different”.
