Artist Statement Submitted 2014
My paintings are a reflection on the question that underlies all my work, what does it take to make a painting today? I’m attracted by the lack of hierarchy in our visual stimuli, all information is equal and the illusion of democracy is pervasive. The unconscious mind attempts to make sense of this sensory overload, to sort it, arrange it, and make images from it. My mind tires to grapple with it all while my paintings seek to still this noise, to focus attention on a consciously constructed image that ignores the precision of the world and revels in the handmade.
