My work explores themes of classic southern heritage and virtues, with a flirting juxtaposition of ambiguity and familiarity. Using specific symbols and narratives, I aim to take these ideas of my virtuous southern upbringing and contrast them with an underlying narrative of the current political climate of my homestate of Alabama. Though this topic can be tough, southern domestic symbols such as Haint Blue porches or seersucker fabric, paired with a voting booth or the staircase from the state governor’s house, create an uncomfortable yet enticing sense of space while hinting to an underlying narrative. The result is a playful set of symbols and clues within each painting, often allowing the harmonies and discords between the recognizable and the ambiguous to float in a cloud of alluring mismatched interpretations.
