Artist Statement Submitted 2019I am interested in exploring contemporary notions of identity and the self through
abstraction, likeness and difference. I make composite drawings from photographs that reference past experiences in addition to present encounters that speak about race, class and the public persona. Concurrently, I use found and recycle materials to speak about private space, notions of survival and the internal self with sculpture. The drawings become the space we present to the world while the sculpture remains undefined and unfinished baggage constantly shifting from form to form in an unending search. Both actions are essential to who I am as person and necessary part of the human psychic. For me I am always troubled by artist who make definitive statements about images that can be interpreted differently depending on is doing the looking. We need the commonality (representation), but we must also be willing to examine difference (abstraction).
