Artist Statement Submitted 2016As a contemporary descendent of a long line of figurative carvers, I create visceral and cerebral portraiture of today's youth with critical portrayal of their worldly inheritance. By confronting complex issues that normally remain mute, I engage in visual rhetoric representing a generation in need of protection as well as avenues of empowerment and change.
During the fall of 2016, I will be working as a long-term Artist-In-Residence of the 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, SC. Building on themes of cultural and societal inheritance in my current work, this new project will utilize information gathered through audio and visual recordings of youth recounting their world in their own words. Murmurs emanating from various audio sources around the monumental 6 foot bust will provide a low cadence of whispered hopes and fears, layered from recorded interviews. The introduction of collaboration, sound, and a shift in scale sets this project apart from current work.
