Artist Statement Submitted 2014This group of images explores books and their enduring, altering presence in our technological time. As new ways of reading and knowing emerge, I am drawn back to the physical object of the book and consideration of its legacy, from an abandoned encyclopedia to a still vibrant bookstore, from a frayed ancient volume to a stack of newly handmade sketchbooks, from the reluctantly discarded to the newly discovered. The way of the book is deep in us.
As is my earlier series on the Sandhill Crane, this body of work is grounded in the Southeast, where I live and work, and connects with the wider world. It reflects my ongoing interest in natural and made, environment and art, tradition and threshold.
This selection is from my current work, the working title of which is Book Time.
